What Got You Where You Are Today?
I started gymnastics at the age of 7 years in a small club near Montreal. Quickly, this sport became a passion for me, and the ultimate goal of reaching the Olympics became my dream. I wasn’t the most talented or the strongest kid back then, but I knew that by giving it my all, I could achieve anything. The more time I was training with high-level athletes, the more I wanted to become like them. In 2013, I started competing in the junior category and became a national champion in my first competition in that category. The national coach suggested that I could transfer with the seniors the same year to challenge me, even if I was only 15 years old at that time. This is the hardest transition any gymnast has to overcome, and a lot of people were expecting me to fail and crumble under the pressure, but the exact opposite happened, I rose to the challenge and qualified for every event but one at our national championships.
In 2016, Canada didn’t qualify a team and only one athlete was allowed to go to the Olympics, I was second and the dream passed me by even if I was this close to making it. I did the only thing I could; I trained twice as hard and led the following four years as the Canadian leader. Through injuries, challenges, setbacks, and even a pandemic, I finally qualified for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo and achieved my dream as the only Canadian gymnast at these games. It was a life-changing experience, but also the confirmation that everything I believed in was true. When surrounded by the right people, with a will of steel and countless efforts, anything is possible.
