It has the fifth-largest country population, 547,627 (as of 2018). It is located in the United Kingdom’s 2nd-most populous Urban Area, with a population of around 2.7 million. It is also the third-most populous Metropolitan Area, with just over 3.3 million people.

It is bordered by the Cheshire Plain and the Pennines to its north and south. A ring of towns makes it a continuous conurbation. Manchester City Council is the local authority.

Liverpool, a city and metropolitan region in Merseyside in England, has a population of 498,042. In 2019, it was the tenth-largest English area by population. Its metro area is fifth in the United Kingdom, with a population totalling 2.24 million.

Liverpool is located on the eastern bank of the Mersey Estuary. It was once part of West Derby’s ancient hundred. It was established as a borough in 1207 and became a city in 1880. In 1889, it became an independent county borough. The Industrial Revolution saw the town grow as a major port. Merchants were also involved in slave trading, along with general cargo, freight, and raw materials like coal and cotton. Liverpool was the main port of departure for English- and Irish emigrants to North America in the 19th century.
