Turkmenistan, a Central Asian landlocked country, is bordered by Kazakhstan in the northwest, Uzbekistan in the north, east, and northeast, Afghanistan in the southeast, Iran in the south, southwest, and the Caspian Sea west. Merv, one of the essential stops on the Silk Road and one of the greatest cities in the Islamic world, was also a significant stop along the Silk Road during medieval times. Turkmenistan was annexed to the Russian Empire in 1881. Later, Turkmenistan played a prominent role in the anti-Bolshevik movement in Central Asia.
