Remove The Limitations And Barriers
Togo, also known as the Togolese Republic, is a country in West Africa. It borders Benin to its east and Ghana to its west. Burkina Faso lies to its north. It extends southward to the Gulf of Guinea, home to its capital, Lome. Togo is 57,000 kilometers (5,008 sq miles) in area. It has a population of around 8 million and is one of the most narrow countries in Africa. The country measures less than 115 km (71 miles) between Ghana (the eastern neighbour) and Benin (the eastern neighbour).
From the 11th to the 16th century, many tribes flocked to the region from all corners. The coastal area was a major trade centre for Europeans in purchasing enslaved people from the 16th to the 18th centuries. This earned Togo and its surrounding region the nickname “The Slave Coast”. Germany created Togoland in 1884 as a protectorate for an area that included present-day Togo. France took over Togo’s rule after World War I. In 1960, Togo was granted independence from France.
GnassingbeEyadema, a military coup d’etat leader in 1967, was elected president of an anti-communist single-party state. Eyadema won the presidency three times after he faced multiparty elections in 1993. These were marred with irregularities. Eyadema, who had been president for 38 consecutive years, was the longest-serving leader of modern African history at the time of his passing. His son, Faure Gnassingbe, was elected president in 2005. As of 2021, he continues to hold office.
