East Timor is also known as Timor-Leste. It is an island nation in Southeast Asia. It includes the eastern half of the island of Timor, as well as the nearby islands Atauro, Jaco, and Oecusse. Oecusse is an exclave located on the island’s northwest side, surrounded by Indonesian West Timor. Australia is the country’s southern neighbour. It is separated from the Timor Sea. The country’s size is 15,007 square kilometres.

Portugal colonized East Timor in the 16 century. It was called Portuguese Timor until 28 Nov 1975 when the Revolutionary Front for an Independent East Timor, or Fretilin, declared the territory’s independence. It was occupied and invaded by the Indonesian military nine days later. The region was then made Indonesia’s 27th province in the following year. The conflict that raged for decades between the Indonesian army and separatist groups, especially Fretilin, was the hallmark of Indonesian occupation.
