Paramaribo, the capital and biggest city of Suriname, is located in the Paramaribo District on the banks of the Suriname River. Paramaribo is home to nearly half of Suriname’s population (2012 census). Since 2002, Paramaribo’s historic inner city has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Nieuw Nickerie, Suriname’s third-largest city, has a population of 12,818. It is also the Nickerie District’s capital and the East-West Link’s terminus.

Nieuw Nickerie has located at the mouth of the Nickerie river on the Atlantic coast. It is opposite the Corantijn river mouth and Corriverton, a Guyanese settlement. A ferry service also operates. The construction of a bridge connecting Suriname to Guyana is ongoing. Major Henk Fernandes Airport, also known as Nieuw Nickerie Airport, is near the city.

Lelydorp, the capital of Wanica District in Suriname, is called. It is Suriname’s second-largest city, with 18,663 (2011).

Nieuw Amsterdam, the capital of the Commewijne District, is in Suriname. It is located at the confluence between the Suriname River & Commewijne Rivers, right across from Paramaribo.

The 2012 census recorded a population of 5,650 people. There are approximately 1,200 residents in the main city, many of them of Javanese or East Indian descent. It is home to the historic Fort Nieuw Amsterdam, which is now an open-air museum. 3 km away from Nieuw Amsterdam is Marienburg, a former sugarcane factory. It forms part of the resort.

Groningen, Suriname’s capital city, is home to the Saramacca District. Groningen grew only after 1960. The East-West Link was constructed around that time, a road connecting Albina via Paramaribo and Nieuw Nickerie.

Groningen was made accessible via road thanks to this. There is a district commissioner’s office, a post office, an office for the police commander and an office of the State health foundation. The J. Eliazer football field was named after the founder of the Football Federation of Saramacca. A Moravian Church and a Roman Catholic church are located here.
