India, also known as the Republic of India, is a country located in South Asia. It is the 7th largest country in terms of area, second-most populous, and the largest democracy in the world. It is bordered by the Indian Ocean to the south, the Arabian Sea to the southwest, and the Bay of Bengal to the southeast. India lies in the Indian Ocean near Sri Lanka and Maldives. The Andaman Islands and the Nicobar Islands share an Indian Ocean maritime border with Thailand, Myanmar, and Indonesia.

The subcontinent, located at the western edge of the Indus river basin, was settled 9,000 years ago. It evolved gradually into the Indus Valley Civilization in the third millennium BCE. An archaic form of Sanskrit, an Indoeuropean language, had reached India via the northwest by 1200 BCE. It was known as the language of Rigveda and marked the beginning of Hinduism.
