Honduras is officially known as the Republic of Honduras. It is located in Central America. To the west, Honduras borders Guatemala, and El Salvador to the southwest. To the south, Nicaragua is at the Gulf of Fonseca. The Gulf of Honduras (a large inlet of the Caribbean Sea) is north. Tegucigalpa is the capital and largest city.

Before the Spanish Colonization of the sixteenth century, Honduras was home to many critical Mesoamerican cultures. Roman Catholicism was introduced by the Spanish, as well as the Spanish language. Many customs have been incorporated into the indigenous culture. Honduras gained independence in 1821. It has been a republic ever since. However, it has endured many social strifes and political instability and is still one of the poorest countries in the Western Hemisphere. The International Court of Justice transferred the northern portion of the Mosquito Coast from Nicaragua to Honduras in 1960.
