Grenada is an island country in the West Indies, in the Caribbean Sea near the southern end of the Grenadines island group. Grenada comprises Grenada’s main island, Carriacou, Petite Martinique, and a few smaller islands that lie north of it. They are part of the Grenadines. It is located southwest of Saint Vincent and Grenadines, northeast of Venezuela, and northwest of Trinidad and Tobago. Its area is 134.6 miles2, with an estimated population of 113 475 in 2022. Its capital city is St. George’s. Grenada is known as the “Island of Spice” due to its mace and nutmeg production.
Grenada was home to the South American indigenous peoples before Europeans arrived in the Americas. Christopher Columbus visited Grenada during his third expedition to the Americas in 1498. After several failed attempts by Europeans to colonize Grenada, the resistance of Island Caribs made it impossible. French colonization began in 1649. It continued for the next century. The Treaty of Paris gave Grenada to the British on 10 February 1763. The British ruled Grenada until 1974.
