Finland, Officially the Republic of Finland. It is a Nordic country that is also a member of the European Union in Northern Europe. It borders Sweden to the west and Russia to its north. It is primarily a boreal forest biome with over 180,000 lakes.
Finland was a predominantly rural nation until the 1950s. The country developed rapidly after World War II and built an advanced economy. It also created a welfare state that was based on the Nordic model. This resulted in widespread prosperity as well as a high per-capita income. In 1955, Finland joined the United Nations and adopted a policy of neutrality. In 1969, Finland joined the OECD, the NATO Partnership for Peace in 1994 and 1995, the European Union in 1995, and the Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council in 1997 and 1999. Finland ranks high in many metrics that measure national performance, such as education, economic competitiveness, quality of life, and human development. Finland was number one in 2015 on the World Human Capital Index and the Press Freedom Index. It was also ranked as the most stable country from 2011-to 2016 by the Fragile State Index. The Global Gender Gap Report ranked Finland second.
