El Salvador, also known as the Republic of El Salvador, is a country in Central America. It is bordered to the north by Honduras and the northwest by Guatemala. It borders the Pacific Ocean to the south San Salvador is El Salvador’s capital and the largest city. In 2022, the country’s population is expected to reach 6.54 million.

The Lenca (after 600AD), the Mayans, and then the Cuzcatlecs were just a few of the Mesoamerican countries that ruled the region historically. Archaeological evidence also suggests an Olmec presence in the area around the first millennium BC. The Spanish Empire conquered Central America in the 16th century and incorporated it into the Viceroyalty of New Spain, which was based out of Mexico City. The Viceroyalty, Mexico, had very little or no influence on the daily affairs of this isthmus. It was first colonized in 1524. The Spanish declared the area the Captaincy General Guatemala in 1609. This included the territory that would become El Salvador until it was freed from Spain in 1821. It was then forced to be incorporated into Mexico’s First Empire. In 1823, it seceded and joined the Federal Republic of Central America. El Salvador was made a sovereign state in 1841 after the federation collapsed. It then joined the Federal Republic of Central America (or the Greater Republic of Central America), which lasted only from 1895 to 1898.
