Cabo Verde is an archipelago which is located in the central Atlantic Ocean. It’s a country comprised of ten volcanic islands covering an area of about 1,557 mi2. These islands can be found between 600 and 800 km west of Cap-Vert, the westernmost point of continental Africa. The Macaronesia Ecoregion includes the Cabo Verde Islands.

Cabo Verde was inaccessible until 15th-century Portuguese explorers discovered and colonized the islands. This resulted in the establishment of the first European settlements in the tropics. Cabo Verde was a crucial player in the Atlantic slave market and enjoyed great economic success in the 16th- and 17th centuries. It attracted privateers, merchants, and pirates. It suffered economic decline in the 19th century due to the departure and suppression of Atlantic slave traders. Cabo Verde gradually recovered its financial status, becoming a central commercial hub and an important stopover point for significant shipping routes. Cabo Verde was established as a Portuguese overseas territory in 1951. But, the residents continued to fight for their independence, which they achieved in 1975.
