Andorra, a sovereign, landlocked microstate, is located on the Iberian Peninsula in the eastern Pyrenees. It borders Spain to the south and France to the north. Andorra is believed to have been founded by Charlemagne. The count of Urgell from 988 ruled over it until it was transferred to Roman Catholic Diocese. In 1278, a charter created the present principality. It has two co-princes, the Spanish Bishop of Urgell, Catalonia, and the French President. Andorra la Vella is its capital and largest city.

Andorra, the sixth-smallest European state, has an area of 181 miles (468 km2) and a populace of around 77,484. The Andorran people are an ethnic Romance group originally of Catalan origin. Andorra is the 16th-smallest country in terms of land area and the 11th-smallest in terms of population. At 1,023 meters above sea level, its capital, Andorra La Vella, is Europe’s highest capital. Catalan is the official language, but French, Spanish, Portuguese and French are all commonly used.
