Lesotho used to be the British Crown Colony at Basutoland. However, it declared its independence from the United Kingdom in October 1966. It is now an independent state member of several international organizations, including the Commonwealth of Nations, United Nations, African Union, and Southern African Development Community. Lesotho means “land and Sotho”. Lesotho’s HIV prevalence rate for people aged 15 to 49 was 22.8% in 2021. This is the highest HIV prevalence rate anywhere.

Maseru, the capital and biggest city in Lesotho, is also its capital. It is also home to the Maseru District’s capital. Maseru, situated on the Caledon River and borders Lesotho-South Africa, can be found on the Caledon River. Maseru had a population of 330760 in 2016.
The capital was designated as the capital in 1869 when the country became a British protectorate. Maseru remained the capital until 1966, when the country gained independence. Sesotho words mean “red sandstones”, hence the name of this city.
Qacha’s Nek dates back to 1888 and is the capital of Qacha’s Nek District, Lesotho. It’s located just two kilometers from the South African border at 1,980 m (6,500 ft above sea level)). The population is approximately 15,900 (2016). It is the home of Machabeng Government Hospital. This is one of two hospitals in the area. The other is the Lesotho Evangelical Church’s Tebellong Hospital.
Mafeteng is a city in Lesotho and Camptown within the district of Mafeteng. It is approximately 76 km south of Maseru, the capital of Lesotho. It has an estimated 61,000 inhabitants. Wepener is the South African border town to Mafeteng.
According to legend, the town was named after Emile Roland, an early visitor who was known as “Left” (literally, “traveler” or simply “passer-by”) Mafeteng is translated to English as “The Place of the Passers-by.”
Butha-Buthe is Lesotho’s capital city and Camptown. It is home to 35,108 people (2016 census). It is named after the mountain Butha-Buthe, located to the north. Its name means “place of deposits”.
Butha-Buthe was created in 1884 to give the local ruler a place where taxes could be paid rather than force him to go to Hlotse.
Mokhotlong, the capital and seat of the Mokhotlong District, is located in the mountainous northeastern region of Lesotho. It is the first central urban area to have an airport on the road from South Africa, across the Sani Pass. This is near the Maloti Mountains. Named “Place of Bald Ibis”, the city’s name comes from Sesotho (the language spoken by the people of Lesotho). Mokhotlong is home to Thabana Ntlenyana, the highest point in southern Africa.
