Solomon Islands
Remove The Limitations And Barriers
The Solomon Islands are a sovereign country with six main islands and more than 900 smaller ones in Oceania. They can be found east and northwest of Vanuatu and Papua New Guinea. It covers an area of 28400 km (11,000 sq mi) with a population of 652,858. The country’s capital, Honiara, is found on Guadalcanal, the largest island. The Solomon Islands archipelago is the country’s name. It is a collection of Melanesian islands, which also includes the North Solomon Islands (a portion of Papua New Guinea). However, it excludes outlying islands such as Bellona, Rennell, and Santa Cruz Islands.
They were settled at least once between 30,000 and 28800 BCE—later waves of migrants, including the Lapita, mixed and produced the modern Solomon Islanders population. Alvaro de Mendana, a Spanish navigator, was the first European to visit the islands in 1568. He named them the Islas Salomon. Mendana returned to the Solomons decades later, in 1595. In 1606 another Spanish expedition was led by Pedro Fernandes de Queiros (Portuguese navigator). The Solomon Islands archipelago was designated Britain’s area of interest by Captain Gibson R.N. of HMS Curacoa in June 1893. This was when the British declared the southern Solomon Islands a British protectorate. The Solomon Islands campaign (1942-1945), which saw intense fighting between the United States and Commonwealth forces and the Empire of Japan (including the Battle of Guadalcanal), was part of World War II.
