Officially known as the Republic of Chad, Chad is a landlocked nation at the crossroads of North Africa and Central Africa. It borders Libya to its north, Sudan to its east, the Central African Republic (the south), Cameroon and Cameroon to its southwest, Nigeria to the southwest (at Lake Chad), and Niger to its west. Chad is home to 16 million people, with 1.6 million of them living in N’Djamena, the capital and biggest city.

Chad is divided into three regions. The north has a desert area, the middle has an arid Sahelian region, and the south has a fertile Sudanian Savanna region. The country’s second-largest wetland is Lake Chad. The official languages of Chad are Arabic and French. There are more than 200 ethnic and linguistic communities in Chad. Chad is home to Islam (51.8%), Christianity (44.1%), and other religions.
