Benin City, the capital and most populous city in Edo State, is located in southern Nigeria. With a population totaling 1,782,000, it is the fourth largest city in Nigeria, after Kano, Lagos, and Ibadan. It lies approximately 40 km (25 mi) north of the Benin River and 320 km (200 mi) east of Lagos. Benin City is home to Nigeria’s largest rubber industry. Oil production is another important industry.

Cotonou is Benin’s economic capital. The official population was 761,137 people in 2006. However, some estimates suggest it could have as many as 2.4 million.

The city is expanding, especially towards the west. The city is located in the southeast, between Lake Nokoue and the Atlantic Ocean.

Porto-Novo, also known as Hogbonu, is Benin’s capital. It covers an area measuring 110 kilometers (42 mi) with a population of 223,552 as of 2002.

The city is located in the southeastern part of Benin on the Gulf of Guinea. It was built originally as a port for the transatlantic slave trade under the Portuguese Empire. Benin’s second-largest city and the home of the national legislature, it is not the capital. However, Cotonou, which is larger, is the seat and headquarters of the government.

Kandi can be described as a town, an arrondissement, or a commune in the Alibori Department in eastern Benin. Kandi was originally a market town. Today, it is a significant farming center. It is located on the nation’s main northern-south highway at 650 km (400 miles) from Cotonou and 523 km (325 miles) north of Porto-Novo. It is the capital of Alibori. It covers 3,421km2 (1,321 sq mi) and has a population of 177.683 people as of 2013. In 2002, the town had 27,227 inhabitants.

Parakou, the capital of the Borgou Department, is the largest city in northern Benin. It has an estimated population of around 206,667.

Parakou is one of the 77 Benin communes. Its mayor has been Souradjou Karimov since 2015.
