For centuries, the territory of Hungary today has been a point of convergence for many peoples. These include Celts and Romans, Germanic tribes, Huns, West Slavs, and Huns. With the conquest by the Hungarian grand prince Arpad of the Carpathian basinin, the foundations of the Hungarian government were laid in the ninth Century. Stephen I, his great-grandson, ascended the throne in 1000 and converted his kingdom into a Christian empire. Hungary was a significant regional power by the 12th Century. It reached its political and cultural peak in the 15th Century. It was occupied partly by the Ottoman Empire after the Battle of Mohacs in 1526. At the beginning of the 18th Century, Hungary was under Habsburg’s control. Later, it joined the Austrian Empire to create Austria-Hungary. This became a significant power in the early 20th Century.
