Many organized kingdoms and states have called the region Zimbabwe, including the Mutapa, Rozvi, and Mthwakazi kingdoms. Since the 11th century, it has been a major transit point for migration and trade. Cecil Rhodes, after the defeat of Mashonaland in 1893 by the British South Africa Company delineated the territory. They later captured Matabeleland, in 1893 Matabeleland. After fierce resistance from the Matabeles, who are well-known for their First Matabele War, they captured Matabeleland in 1893 Matabeleland. Company rule ended with the establishment of Southern Rhodesia in 1923. This British colony is self-governing and independent of the Company.
