La Paz is both the capital and the seat of government in the Plurinational State. La Paz has an estimated 816.044 inhabitants and is Bolivia’s third most populous city. The city’s metropolitan area comprises El Alto and Viacha, as well as La Paz and Mecapaca. It has a population totaling 2.0 million. This is in addition to Santa Cruz de la Sierra, which has a population of 2.3 million. It is also the capital town of the La Paz Department.

Sucre, Bolivia’s constitutional capital and capital of the Chuquisaca Department, is also the 6th most populous city in Bolivia. Sucre is located in the country’s south-central region at an elevation of 2,810m (9,214ft). The town enjoys a subtropical climate at high altitudes with cool temperatures all year.

Its pre-Columbian title was Chuquisaca. During the Spanish Empire, it was known as La Plata. The city of Chuquisaca was independent of the Inca Empire before the Spanish arrived. Only the Charcas paid the ransom to free the Inca captives. The region today is dominated by Quechua people, but there are also Aymara influences and communities.

Santa Cruz de la Sierra, known as Santa Cruz, is Bolivia’s largest city and the capital of the Santa Cruz region.

The Santa Cruz de la Sierra Metropolitan Region, located in the eastern Tropical Lowlands of Bolivia, is Bolivia’s most populous urban area. It will be home to an estimated 2.4 million people in 2020. It comprises seven Santa Cruz municipalities: Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Warnes, and Cotoca.

Cochabamba, a municipality and city in central Bolivia, is located in the Andes mountain range in a valley. It is the capital city of the Cochabamba Department and the fourth-largest in Bolivia. According to the 2012 Bolivian census, it has a population estimated at 630,587. Its name derives from the Quechua words qucha, which means “lake,” and pampa, which means “open plain.” The city’s residents are often called cochalas or, more formal, cochabambinos.

Potosi is Bolivia’s capital and the municipality of the Department of Potosi. At a nominal 4,090m (13,420 feet), it is the highest city in the world. It was home to the Spanish colonial silver mine for centuries. The city’s historic heart has preserved a significant amount of colonial architecture. This, along with the Cerro Rico de Potosi, is UNESCO World Heritage Site.
