Sharjah, part of the Dubai Sharjah-Ajman metropolitan region, is third in the United Arab Emirates population.

While the emirate shares some legal, political, and military functions with other UAE emirates within a federal framework, each is responsible for specific functions, such as civil law enforcement, provision, and maintenance of local facilities. The emirate also has jurisdiction over others. Since the 18th century, Sharjah has been ruled over by the Al Qasimi family.

Ajman, the capital of the United Arab Emirates emirate Ajman, is in Ajman. It is fifth in UAE, after Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Sharjah. It is located along the Persian Gulf and is surrounded by Sharjah, the more prominent emirate in the territory.

Umm Al Quwain, the capital and the largest city in the Emirate Umm Al Quwain, is in the United Arab Emirates.

The city is situated on the peninsula of Khor Al Bidiyah. Sharjah, to the southwest, and Ras Al Khaimah, to the northeast, are the closest major cities. Mangroves along the coast surround the town. The local economy is dominated by fishing.
