Muscat, Oman’s capital and most populous city, is also the largest. It is also the Governorate of Muscat’s seat. According to NCSI, the Muscat Governorate had a population of 1.4 million in September 2018. The metropolitan area covers approximately 3,500km2 (1,400 sq mi) and includes six provinces known as wilayats.

Muscat has been an important trading port between the west-west since the 1st Century AD. At various times in its history, it was ruled by many indigenous tribes and foreign powers like the Persians, Portugal Empire, Iberian Union, and the Ottoman Empire. Muscat was a regional military power during the 18th century. Its influence extended to East Africa and Zanzibar.

Sur is the capital city of Ash Sharqiyah South Governorate, and the former capital of the Ash Sharqiyah Region in northeastern Oman, on the coast of the Gulf of Oman. It is located about 93 mi (150 km) southeast of the Omani capital Muscat. Historically, the city has been an important destination point for sailors. Today, the sea still plays an integral part in life in Sur.

Nizwa, the largest city in the Ad Dakhiliyah Region of Oman, was once the capital of Oman. Nizwa lies approximately 140 km (87 miles) away from Muscat. It takes 1.5 hours. It is home to approximately 72,000 people.

Nizwa, one of Oman’s oldest cities, was once a hub of religion, trade, education, and art. The Jama (grand mosque) was once a hub for Islamic learning. It is a crucial point of convergence at the Western Hajar Mountains. This gave Nizwa its significance. It is situated amid a lush spread of date palms and strategically placed at the crossroads between Muscat and Dhofar, thus providing a link to a large portion of the country.

Salalah, the capital and the largest city in the southern Omani Governorate of Dhofar is Salalah. It had a population of 197,169 in 2009.

Salalah, the third-largest city of the Sultanate of Oman and the largest in the Dhofar province, is Salalah. Salalah is home to Qaboos bin Sayed, the former Sultan. Salalah is a popular destination for people from Oman and other regions during the monsoon/khareef season (which runs from June through September). Due to the climate and monsoon, the city can grow bananas and coconuts. These vegetables and fruits can be grown in many of the city’s gardens.

Sohar, the capital of Al Batinah North Governorate, Oman. Suhar, the ancient capital of Oman that was once an important Islamic port city, has been described as Sinbad’s mythical birthplace.

According to the 2010 census, Suhar had a population of 140,006, making it Oman’s fifth-most populous settlement. It was initially an industrial town until the 2000s when the Sohar Industrial Port was built. This port has since become a central Omani manufacturing hub.
