Santo Domingo was once called Santo Domingo de Guzman or Ciudad Trujillo. It is now the capital and largest city in the Dominican Republic. It also has the largest and most populous metropolitan area in the Caribbean. The city’s total population was 2,908,607 in 2010, including the metropolitan area. Coterminous is the town with the Distrito Nacional boundaries, which Santo Domingo Province also borders on three sides.

Puerto Plata is also known as San Felipe de Puerto Plata. It is the capital of Puerto Plata. It is also an important trading port. Playa Dorada (or Costa Dorada) is two resorts in Puerto Plata, located in the east. The city has 100,000 hotel rooms. Puerto Plata is home to the first aerial tramway in the Caribbean. It allows visitors to ride up to Pico Isabel de Torres, 793m in height.

Santiago de los Caballeros is commonly known simply as Santiago. It is the second-largest Dominican Republic city and fourth-largest in terms of population. It is also the capital of Santiago Province. It has 1,173,015 residents. Santiago is approximately 155km (96 mi) north of Santo Domingo, at an average elevation of 178m (584ft).

The head municipality of La Altagracia, located in the eastern half of the country, is Salvaleon de Higuey. This city is home to the Basilica de Nuestra Senora de la Altagracia. Many Catholics come here to pray.

La Romana is the capital and municipality of La Romana in the southeastern region of La Romana. It is located opposite Catalina Island. It is one of the 10 largest cities in the Dominican Republic, with 130,426 people living within its city limits. Of these, 127,623 live in urban areas, while 2,803 live in rural areas. Romana is derived from the Indian word “Bomana”, which was a name that Indians gave to the Romana River.
