Indonesia, officially the Republic of Indonesia, is a country in Southeast Asia and Oceania between the Indian and Pacific oceans. It consists of over 17,000 islands, including Sumatra, Sulawesi, Java, and Borneo and New Guinea parts. With about 270 million people, Indonesia is the world’s fourth-most populous country and the most populous Muslim-majority country. Indonesia is a presidential, constitutional republic with an elected legislature. It has 34 provinces, of which five have special status. The country’s capital, Jakarta, is the world’s second-most populous urban area. Indonesia shares land borders with Papua New Guinea, East Timor, and the eastern part of Malaysia and maritime borders with Singapore, Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines, Australia, Palau, and India. Despite its large population and densely populated regions, Indonesia has vast wilderness areas supporting one of the world’s highest levels of biodiversity.

Located 768 meters (2,520 feet) above sea level, the highest point in the North area with an altitude of 1,050 meters, and the lowest in the South is 675 meters above sea level, approximately 140 kilometers (87 miles) southeast of Jakarta, Bandung has cooler year-round temperatures than most other Indonesian cities.
The city lies on a river basin surrounded by volcanic mountains that provides a natural defense system, which was the primary reason for the Dutch East Indies government’s plan to move the capital from Batavia (modern-day Jakarta) to Bandung.
Surabaya, the capital of East Java province in Indonesia is also the second-largest Indonesian city after Jakarta. It is located on the Madura Strait at the northeastern edge of Java island. It is also one of the oldest port cities in Southeast Asia. Surabaya, along with Medan and Makassar, is one of four major central cities in Indonesia, according to the National Development Planning Agency.

With 4,744,323 people in the 2020 Census, the Medan metropolitan area includes Binjai, Deli Serdang Regency, and a portion of Karo Regency. Medan is a multi-cultural metropolis and a bustling trading city that borders the Strait of Malacca.
