Meknes, one of the four Imperial Cities of Morocco, is located in northern Morocco. It is the sixth-largest city in the kingdom by population. Meknes was established by the Almoravids in the 11th Century as a military settlement. It became the capital of Morocco during the reign of Sultan Moulay Ismail (1672-1727), the son of the founder Alaouite Dynasty.
Moulay Ismail built a huge imperial palace complex and gave the city extensive fortifications. According to the 2014 Moroccan census, 632,079 people lived in the city. It is the capital of Meknes Prefecture and an important economic point in the region.
