Angola is officially known as the Republic of Angola (Portuguese: Republica de Angola) and is located on the coast of southern Africa. It is the second-largest Lusophone (Portuguese-speaking) country in total area and population (behind Brazil) and the seventh-largest country in Africa. It borders Namibia to the south, DR Congo and Zambia to its north, the Atlantic Ocean to its west, and the Atlantic Ocean to the east.

Luanda is the most populous city and the capital. Angola has been continuously inhabited since the Paleolithic Age. Portugal’s colonization was the main reason Angola became a nation-state. It all began with Portuguese trading posts and coastal settlements. Angola’s eventual creation as a nation-state was not possible due to the resistance of native groups such as the Clamato or Kwanyama.
