Panama officially is the Republic of Panama. It is a transcontinental country located in Central America and South America. It borders Costa Rica to its west, Colombia to its southeast, the Caribbean Sea, and the Pacific Ocean south. Panama City is the capital and largest city. Nearly half of the nation’s 4,000,000 inhabitants live in its metropolitan area.

Before the arrival of Spanish colonists in the 16th century, Panama was home to indigenous tribes. It retreated from Spain in 1821 and joined the Republic of Gran Colombia. This union was made up of Nueva Granada, Ecuador, and Venezuela. In 1831 Gran Colombia was disintegrated, and Panama and Nueva Granada became the Republic of Colombia. The United States supported Panama’s independence from Colombia in 1903.

This allowed the completion of the Panama Canal by the US Army Corps of Engineers, which was completed between 1904 and 2014. According to the 1977 Torrijos-Carter Treaties, the United States agreed to transfer the canal to Panama on December 31, 1999. In 1979, the surrounding territory was returned for the first time.
