Zambia is a landlocked nation at the crossroads between Central, Southern, and East Africa. It borders Tanzania in the northeast and Malawi in the southeast. Botswana, Namibia, Angola, and Zimbabwe are to the south. Lusaka is the capital of Zambia, located in the southern-central region. Most of Zambia’s population lives in Lusaka, the country’s economic center to the south, and Copperbelt Province to the north.

The Khoisan people inhabited the region in its early years. The thirteenth-century Bantu expansion had a significant impact on the area. Following European explorers in the eighteenth century, the British colonized the region into the British protectorates of Barotseland-North-Western Rhodesia and North-Eastern Rhodesia towards the end of the nineteenth century. In 1911, they were combined to form Northern Rhodesia. For most colonial periods, the British South Africa Company recommended that Zambia establish an administration in London.
