Montevideo is Uruguay’s capital and largest city. The 2011 census shows that the city has a population totalling 1,319,108, about one-third of Uruguay’s population. It covers an area of 201 km (78 sq mi). Montevideo, located on the country’s south coast on the northeastern side of Rio de la Plata, is the most populous.

Bruno Mauricio de Zabala (Spanish soldier) established the city in 1724 as a strategic move amid the Spanish-Portuguese dispute about the Platine region. The town was briefly under British control in 1807 but was eventually retaken and occupied by Spanish criollos. Montevideo is home to Mercosur’s administrative headquarters and ALADI, Latin America’s largest trade bloc. This position has been compared to that of Brussels in Europe.

Salto, the capital of the Salto Department, is located in northern Uruguay. It was home to 104,028 people, making it the second-most populated city in Uruguay, according to the 2011 census.

Artigas, the capital of Uruguay’s Artigas Department, is called Artigas. Its name derives from Jose Gervasio Artigas, a national hero who fought for the River Plate’s liberation. He also sought to establish a federative country from these colonies. It is currently the eleventh-most populous city in the nation, according to the 2011 census.

Tacuarembo, the capital of the Tacuarembo Department, is located in north-central Uruguay.

Km. Route 5 at Km. 390, 113 km south-southwest from Rivera, the capital of the Rivera Department. Routes 26-31 also intersect with Route 5 within city limits. The north portion of the city is bounded by the stream Arroyo Tacuarembo Chico. This stream is a tributary to Rio Tacuarembo. It is the eighth-most populated city in the country, according to the 2011 census.
