It leads to Ville Nouvelle, the modern city. This avenue traverses the great Avenue Habib Bourguiba, which is often referred to in media and travel guides as “the Tunisian Champs Elysees” because the colonial-era buildings stand out against the smaller, more ancient structures.

Bizerte is located in Tunisia’s Bizerte Governorate. It is located 65km (40mil) north of Tunis, the capital city of Africa. It is the oldest settlement in Tunisia and was founded around 1100 BC by settlers from Sidon, a Phoenician port. Archaeologists have confirmed that there were no Phoenician settlements within the West Mediterranean before the 9th century bc. It was also the last French-controlled town after France gained independence. In 2014, the city was home to 142,966 people.

Kairouan, the capital of the Kairouan Governorate, is Tunisia’s UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Umayyads founded the city in 670 during the reign of Caliph Mu’awiya. This was when it became an important centre of Sunni Islamic scholarship. In the town is located the Mosque of Uqba.

Sousse, Tunisia’s capital and largest city, is the capital of the Sousse Governorate. The city is located 140 km (87 miles) south of Tunis and has 271,428 residents (2014). Sousse lies in central-east Tunisia, at the Gulf of Hammamet. This is part of the Mediterranean Sea. Its economy is built on transportation equipment, processed foods, olive oil, textiles, and tourism. It is also home to the Universite de Sousse.

Gabes, Tunisia’s capital, is also the governorate of Gabes. It lies on the coast of the Gulf of Gabes. Gabes, with a population of 152 921 people, is the 6th largest Tunisian town. Gabes lies 327km from Tunis and 113km from Sfax.
