Aleppo, a Syrian city, is the capital ofthe Aleppo Governorate. It is the most populous Syrian Governorate. It had a population of 4.6 million in 2010.

Aleppo is the oldest continuously inhabited city in the world. It may have been inhabited as far back as the sixth millennium BC. Tell as-Sawda, and Tell al-Ansari excavations, located just south of Aleppo’s old city, indicate that the area was occupied in the second half of the third millennium BC by Amorites. This is also when Aleppo was first mentioned in the cuneiform tablets found in Ebla, Mesopotamia. They refer to it as part of the Amorite state Yamhad and highlight its military and commercial importance. Its strategic position as a trading hub between the Mediterranean Sea, Mesopotamia, and Mesopotamia is what gives it such a long history.

Damascus, Syria’s capital, is also the oldest capital in the globe and, according to some, the fourth holiest place in Islam.

It is also known as as-Sam in Syria and is referred to as the “City of Jasmine”. Damascus is an important cultural center in the Levant and Arab world. In 2019, the city was home to 2,079,000 people.

Homs, also known as Emesa in pre-Islamic Syria, is a city located in western Syria. It is the capital of Homs Governorate. It is situated at 501m (1,644ft) above sea level. It is 162 km (101 mi) north of Damascus. Homs, is located on the Orontes River and serves as the central link between the interior city and the Mediterranean coast.

Idlib, located in northwestern Syria is the capital of Idlib Governorate. It is located 59 km (37 mi) southwest of Aleppo at an elevation of almost 500m (1,600 feet) above sea level. At the start of the Syrian Civil War, 2011, the city was seized by the Syrian Revolution. By 2017, the city was the seat of the Syrian Salvation Government.

Deir ez-Zor, the largest city in eastern Syria, is also the country’s seventh-largest. Deir ez-Zor, which is located 450km (280 mi) northeast of Damascus and on the banks the Euphrates River. It is also the capital of Deir ez-Zor Governorate. It had 271,800 inhabitants as of the 2018 census.
