Sri Lanka, also known under the name Ceylon or officially the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka (also called Ceylon), is an Asian island nation. It is situated in the Indian Ocean, southeast of the Arabian Sea, and southwest of the Bay of Bengal. The Indian subcontinent can be separated by the Gulf of Mannar or the Palk Strait. It is also found in the Indian Ocean. Sri Lanka shares a maritime frontier with India, Maldives and India. According to the Human Development Index, Sri Lanka is the highest-ranking South Asian country. Also, it has the second-highest per capita income in South Asia.
