South Sudan is an east/central African country that is landlocked. It is bordered by Ethiopia, Sudan and the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Uganda, and Kenya. The country has 11.06 million inhabitants, 525,953 of whom live in Juba, the capital and biggest city.

South Sudanese are mainly composed of Nilotic peoples. It is also one of the youngest countries in the world, with half the population under 18 years. Most people are Christians or adhere to other Indigenous faiths. It is a member country of the United Nations and the African Union. The East African Community and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development are also members. It is also a signatory to the Geneva Conventions. South Sudan is ranked third in the UN World Happiness Report 2019, third on the Global Peace Index and fourth on the American Funds for Peace’s Fragile States Index.
