Officially renamed Gqeberha, Port Elizabeth is the largest seaport city in South Africa and the most populous municipality in the Eastern Cape province. It is also the home of the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality in South Africa, the second-largest urban area. It is South Africa’s sixth-largest city and the cultural, financial, and economic center of the Eastern Cape.

Port Elizabeth was established in 1820 as the capital of the Cape Colony. It was created by 4,000 British colonists who settled in Algoa Bay to reinforce the border between the Cape Colony (Xhosa) and the Cape Colony. It is also known as “The Friendly City” and “The Windy City.” The Eastern Cape Geographical Names Committee recommended in 2019 that Port Elizabeth be renamed Gqeberha after the Xhosa name for the Baakens River, which flows through it. Officially, the city’s name was changed on 23 February 2021.
