It was created by 4,000 British colonists who settled in Algoa Bay to reinforce the border between the Cape Colony (Xhosa) and the Cape Colony. It is also known as “The Friendly City” and “The Windy City.” The Eastern Cape Geographical Names Committee recommended in 2019 that Port Elizabeth be renamed Gqeberha after the Xhosa name for the Baakens River, which flows through it. Officially, the city’s name was changed on 23 February 2021.
