Officially the Republic of Nauru was formerly called Pleasant Island. It is an island nation and microstate in Oceania in the Central Pacific. It is located 300km (190 mi) east of Banaba Island, Kiribati. It is also located northwest of Tuvalu, 1,300km (810 mi) northeast of the Solomon Islands. It is southeast of the Federated States of Micronesia and south of the Marshall Islands. Nauru, which has a 21km2 (8.1 mi) area, is the third-smallest country, after Monaco and Vatican City. It also happens to be the smallest nation and the island’s smallest. The country’s estimated 10,000 inhabitants are second in the world (not counting colonies and overseas territories), behind Vatican City.

Nauru was established by people from Micronesia around 1000 BCE. In the 19th century, the German Empire annexed it and became a colony. Nauru was annexed by people from Micronesia in the late 19th century and made a League of Nations mandate. It was administered by Australia, New Zealand, Britain, and New Zealand after World War I. During World War II, Nauru was occupied and swept away by Japanese troops. The country was placed under the United Nations trusteeship after the war. Nauru was granted independence in 1968. It joined the Pacific Community (SPC) in 1969.
