Liberia
Remove The Limitations And Barriers
Liberia is located on the West African coast. It borders Sierra Leone to the northwest, Guinea to its north, Ivory Coast, and the Atlantic Ocean south and southwest. It is home to approximately 5 million people and covers an area measuring 111,369 km2. English is the national language. However, more than 20 languages of indigenous origin are spoken to reflect the country’s cultural and ethnic diversity. Monrovia is the capital and largest city in the country.
Liberia was established in the early 19th century as a project by the American Colonization Society. This society believed that blacks would have better opportunities in Africa for freedom and success than in the United States. Between 1822-1861, over 15,000 black freed or free-born people in America faced legal and social oppression. They were joined by 3,198 Afro-Caribbeans who moved to Liberia. Gradually forming an “Americo-Liberian” identity over time, the settlers brought their culture and traditions with them. The Liberian constitution was modeled after the U.S. flag, and its capital was named after James Monroe, an ACS supporter. The Liberia Declaration of Independence was July 26, 1847. The U.S. didn’t recognize it until February 5, 1862.
