Ivory Coast, also known as Cote d’Ivoire or Ivory Coast (officially the Republic of Cote d’Ivoire), is a country along the southern coast of West Africa. The country’s political capital, Yamoussoukro, is located in the middle of the country. Abidjan is its largest and most important city. It borders Guinea to the northwest, Liberia and Mali to the west, Mali to the northwest, Burkina Fasoin to the northeast, Ghana to the east, and the Gulf of Guinea (the Atlantic Ocean to the south). The official language is French. However, many indigenous languages are used in this country, such as Bete, Baoule and Dioula, and Dan. There are 78 languages spoken in total on the Ivory Coast. Many religiously diverse people are in the country, including followers of Christianity, Islam, and indigenous faiths.

Ivory Coast had many states before European colonization. These included Gyaaman, Baoule, and the Kong Empire. In 1843, France made the area a protectorate and became a French colony. This was during the European scramble to find Africa. Felix Houphouet Bouigny, who ruled until 1993, gave the country independence in 1960. According to regional standards, Ivory Coast, which was relatively stable, established close economic and political ties with its West African neighbors while maintaining close relations with France. In 1999, a coup d’etat was implemented. Then two civil wars erupted between 2002-2007 and 2010-2011. In 2000, it adopted a new constitution.
