Bissau, the capital of Guinea-Bissau, is the largest city and the seat of government. It is situated on the Atlantic coast of Guinea-Bissau, at the Geba River estuary. It is the country’s largest port, military, and administrative center.

Bissau is home to copra, peanuts, palm oil, and rubber. The Osvaldo Vieira International Airport serves the city. Two Portuguese international schools serve Bissau. Bissau has many attractions, including Amilcar Cabral’s mausoleum and other Portuguese historical sites. The Bissau New Stadium is another highlight. Large parts of Bissau were destroyed in the Civil War of Guinea-Bissau. Some of these areas were rebuilt, while others remain in ruins. Bissau’s city center is still in poor condition.

Bafata, located in central Guinea-Bissau, was the birthplace for Amilcar Cabral, one of Africa’s most prominent anti-colonial leaders. Bafata, the capital of the Bafata region and the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese Bafata, is the current capital. It is known for its brickmaking industry. The town has been a central trade hub for the Portuguese since the 1880s. Here were traded peanuts, hides, and textiles. The Bafata Airport serves the city.

Tourists interested in wildlife viewing can arrange tours to see monkeys and antelopes in the forest surrounding Bafata. Although the town is one of the largest in Guinea-Bissau, it is still undeveloped with no infrastructure.

Gabú is eastern Guinea-Bissau’s largest town. It is also the Gabú Region’s capital. Islam is the dominant religion in this city, and the Falu people are the major ethnic group inhabiting Gabú. The region where the city stands were once the center of the Kaabu empire. Today, it is an important market town and trade center.

Bissorã is a town located in the Oio Region of Guinea-Bissau. Population 11,964 (2008 est).

After the abrupt independence from Portugal in 1974 due to Lisbon’s Carnation Revolution, many of the black Guinean soldiers who served in the Portuguese Army and fought against the independence guerrillas were disarmed and left behind. Several thousand were executed by the new ruling power of Guinea-Bissau, the PAICG.
A small number had managed to emigrate previously to Portugal or other African nations. The most famous massacre occurred in Bissorã. 1980 PAIGC published No Pintcha, dated 29 November 1980, in which it admitted that many people were executed and buried together in unmarked graves in the woods around Cumera, Portugal and Mansaba.

Bolama is an administrative region in Guinea-Bissau, consisting primarily of the Bijagós Archipelago of the country’s southern coast, together with a small coastal strip centered on the coastal town of São João. It has an area of 2,624 km2. Its capital is Bolama, on the island of the same name. It is a coastal region covered with Mangrove swamps, rain forests, and tangled forests and receives an annual rainfall of more than 1,000 mm (39 in).
