Croatia, officially known as the Republic of Croatia, is located along the Adriatic Sea at the intersection of Central and Southeast Europe. Croatia borders Slovenia to its northwest, Hungary to its northeast, Serbia to the east, and Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro, respectively, to the southeast. It also shares a maritime border with Italy to the southwest and west. Croatia covers 56,594 km (21,851 sq miles) and has a population of 4.07 million. The country’s capital, Zagreb, is the largest and most populous city. There are twenty counties. The World Bank has classified Croatia as a high-income economy.

It is also at the top of the Human Development Index. The economy is dominated by the service, industry, and agricultural sectors. Croatia is among the top 20 tourist destinations. Tourism is an important source of income. A large portion of the economy is controlled by the state, which also spends a lot. Croatia’s largest trading partner is the European Union. Croatia offers social security, universal healthcare, tuition-free primary, secondary and higher education, and support for culture through public institutions, corporate investments in media, publishing, and other services.
