This rate is also the highest in Western Hemisphere. Belmopan, the capital, is Belize City, its largest city.
Between 1500 BC to AD300, the Maya civilization spread from Mexico to Belize. It prospered until about 1200. Christopher Columbus, an explorer from 1492, explored the Gulf of Honduras and initiated contact with Europe. English settlers started European exploration in 1638. The British and Spanish claimed the land during this period until Britain won the Battle of St. George’s Caye (1798). It was made a British colony by 1840 and was then known as British Honduras. It became a Crown colony in 1862. On the 21st of September 1981, the United Kingdom declared its independence.
