Hunter-gatherers around 13,000 years ago first settled Uruguay’s area. At the time of the Europeans’ arrival, the dominant tribe was the Charrua. The Portuguese established Colonia do Sacramento in 1680. Uruguay was later colonized by Europeans relative to other countries. Because of competing claims to the area, the Spanish established Montevideo as a military fortress in the 18th century. After a four-way battle between Portugal, Spain, Argentina, and Brazil, Uruguay gained independence in 1811-1828. The country was still subject to foreign interference and influence throughout the 19th century. The military played a significant role in domestic politics.
