Kyiv, the capital and largest city in Ukraine, is also it’s most populous. It lies in north-central Ukraine, along the Dnieper River. It was home to 2,962,180 people, making it the seventh most populous European city.

Kyiv is a major industrial, scientific and educational centre in Eastern Europe. Many high-tech industries and higher education institutions are located in this city, as well as historical landmarks. It has an extensive public transport network and infrastructure, which includes the Kyiv Metro.

Lviv, the capital of western Ukraine, is also the seventh-largest inhabitant. It has a population of 717,510 (2021 est.). Lviv is one of the most cultural centres in Ukraine.

It was named in honour of Leo, the eldest son of Daniel, King of Ruthenia. From 1272 to 1349, it was the capital city of the Kingdom, Galicia-Volhynia[2]. When King Casimir III, Great of Poland, conquered it. It was oncce the capital of the Ruthenian Voivodeship of the Kingdom of Poland from 1434. After the First Partition of Poland in 1772, it became the capital of the Habsburg Kingdom of Galicia, Lodomeria. It was briefly the capital of the West Ukrainian People’s Republic in 1918. The city was also the centre for the Lwow Voivodeship of the Second Polish Republic between the wars.

Kharkov, or Russian: Khar’kov, is Ukraine’s second-largest city. It is located in the country’s northeast and is also the largest city within the historical Slobozhanshchyna area. Kharkiv Oblast’s administrative centre and the Kharkiv Raion are located in Kharkiv. The current population is 1,433,886 (2021 est).

Kharkiv was established in 1654 as a Kharkiv castle. Initially, it was a small fortress, but it grew into a significant centre of industry, trade, and Ukrainian culture within the Russian Empire. Russians dominated the city’s population at the start of the 20th Century. The Soviet government’s Ukrainization policy made the city majority Ukrainian-populated. However, there were also significant numbers of Russians. From December 1919 to January 1934, Kharkiv served as the capital of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic. The money was then moved to Kyiv (Modern Day Kyiv).

Odesa is Ukraine’s third-largest city and municipality. It is also a central transport hub, tourist centre, seaport, and tourism hub. It is located in the southwest, on the Black Sea shore. Odesa Raion’s administrative centre and Odesa Oblast’s cultural centre are here. Odesa is also known as the “pearl in the Black Sea”, the South Capital (under the Russian Empire & the Soviet Union), the Humor Capital, and the Southern Palmyra.

There was an ancient Greek settlement at this location before the Tsarist establishment in Odessa. Haci I Giray, the Khan of Crimea, founded a Tatar settlement on the site in 1440. It was named Hacibey (or Khadjibey). Hacibey and the surrounding areas were under the Lithuanian Grand Duchy’s control for some time. In 1529, they became part of Ottoman territory. They remained there until the Russo-Turkish War in 1792 saw the empire’s fall.

Dnipro, Ukraine’s fourth-largest urban area, was home to approximately 1 million people from 1926 to May 2016. It is situated in eastern Ukraine at 391 km (243 mi), southeast of Kyiv. Dnipro, the administrative centre for the Dnipropetrovsk oblast. It is the administrative centre of the Dnipro urban Hromada. It has a population of 980,948 (2021 is est.)

Archaeological finds suggest that the fortified first town in Dnipro’s territory dates back to around the 16th century. Other evidence indicates that Samar was an area in Dnipro’s Samarskyi District and existed as early as the 1520s.
