Lisbon is Portugal’s capital and the largest city, with an estimated population of 544,851 within its administrative limits in an area of 100.05 km2. Lisbon’s urban area extends beyond the city’s administrative limits, with a population of around 2.7 million, the 11th-most populous urban area in the European Union. About 2.9 million people live in the Lisbon metropolitan area, representing approximately 27% of the country’s population. It is mainland Europe’s westernmost capital city and the only one along the Atlantic coast. Lisbon lies on the Atlantic Ocean and the River Tagus in the western Iberian Peninsula.

Porto, or Oporto, is the second largest city in Portugal. It is also the capital of the Porto District and one of the most critical urban areas on the Iberian Peninsula. Porto city itself, or the entire municipality of Porto, is tiny in comparison to its metropolitan area. It has an estimated population of just 231,962 inhabitants and a 41.42km2 municipality.

Coimbra is both a city in Portugal and a municipality. The 2011 census showed that the municipality had a population of 143,397. It covers an area of 319.40 km (123.3 sq mi).

It is Portugal’s fourth largest urban center, after Lisbon, Porto, and Braga. It is also the largest city in the District of Coimbra and Centro Region. The Regiao de Coimbra is home to approximately 460,000 people. It consists of 19 municipalities and covers an area totaling 4,336 km (1,674 mi).

Braga is the capital city of Braga, a northwestern Portuguese region. It also includes the municipality of Braga, which is part of the historical and cultural Minho Province.

It is home to 193,333 residents (in 2021), making it the seventh-largest municipality in Portugal. Its total area is 183.40km2. Its urban area is agglomerated and extends from the Cavado River to the Este River. Portugal’s third largest urban center (after Lisbon and Porto).

Guimaraes a municipality and city located in northern Portugal’s Braga district. It has been listed since 2001 because it represents an “exceptionally well preserved and authentic example of the transformation of a medieval settlement into a contemporary town” in Europe.

Guimaraes also belongs to the Ave Subregion, one of the most industrialized subregions in the country. It is also part of the historic Minho Province. According to the latest data, 152.309 people live in this city. It covers an area of 240.95 kilometers (93.03 mi). Domingos Braganca is the Socialist Party’s current Mayor.
