It is the administrative capital and royal capital of The Netherlands, its seat of government, and the capital of South Holland. It is home to the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court.

Rotterdam is the 2nd-largest municipality and city in the Netherlands. It is located in South Holland at the mouth of the Nieuwe Maas channel that leads into the Rhine–the Meuse–Scheldt delta at the North Sea. Its history dates back to 1270 when a dam in the Rotte was built. William IV, Count de Holland, granted Rotterdam city rights in 1340.

The metropolitan area of Rotterdam-The Hague, home to approximately 2.7 million people, is the 10th largest in the European Union.

Utrecht, the capital and largest city in the Netherlands and the most populous of all the cities within the province of Utrecht, is also the fourth-largest municipality. It is located in the central Netherlands, at the Randstad conurbation’s eastern corner.

Eindhoven, located in the southern part of the Netherlands’ fifth-largest municipality and city, is also the fifth-largest. It was home to 235,923 people in 2021. This made it the largest city in North Brabant. Eindhoven was initially located at the confluence between the Gender and Dommel rivers.

The population of the metropolitan area is 780,611 people. 753,426 people live in the city. About two million people live in the Brabantse Stedenrij combined metro area.
