Martinique
Remove The Limitations And Barriers
Martinique is both an island and an oversea department/region. It is also a single territorial collectivity in France. Martinique, an integral part of France’s Republic, is found in the Lesser Antilles region of the West Indies. It is in the eastern Caribbean Sea. It covers 1,128km2 (436 sq mi) and has a population estimated at 376,480 as of January 2016. It is located north of Saint Lucia, northwest of Barbados, and south of Dominica. Martinique is also an Outermost Region of the European Union (OMR) and a special territory. The currency used is the euro. Almost everyone speaks French, the only official language, and Martinican Creole.
First, the island was occupied by Arawaks and then by Caribs. The Arawaks were described as being gentle, timorous Indians, while the Caribs were described as cannibal warriors. The Arawaks were from Central America around the 1st Century AD, while the Caribs arrived from Venezuelan coasts around the 11th Century. The Caribs had killed many of their enemies by the time Columbus arrived. They spared the women and kept them for domestic or personal use.

In 1638, Pierre Belain d’Esnambuc’s nephew and first governor of Martinique, Jacques Dyel du Parquet (1606-1658), decided to build Fort Saint Louis as a defence against enemy attacks.
The fort was soon destroyed and rebuilt in 1669 by Louis XIV, who was appointed the Marquise of Baas governor-general. His orders, and those of his successors, including the Countess of Blenac, led to the fort’s construction with a Vauban plan.
This low region of Martinique, with its mangroves and flooded lands, keeps in its name the memory of the pacific manatees, hunted for their meat by the island’s first inhabitants. The river La Lézarde was frequently visited by Manatees, now extinct in the Lesser Antilles.
The legend says that once upon a time, a manatee was found dead on the river banks, and since then, the town has adopted the name Le Lamentin. Nowadays, a symbolic statue of a manatee rests in front of city hall.
