Guatemala City is also known locally as Guate or Guatemala. It is the capital of Guatemala and the largest city in Guatemala. It is also the most populous area in Central America. It is situated in the country’s south-central region, Valle de la Ermita. This is the capital of Guatemala’s Municipality and the Guatemala Department.

Guatemala City is home to the Mayan city Kaminaljuyu. It was founded in 1500 BC. A new town was founded following the Spanish conquest. It was named the capital of the Kingdom of Guatemala in 1776. Guatemala City, established in 1821 as the capital of the newly formed United Provinces of Central America, was the site of Spain’s declaration of independence from Central America.

Antigua Guatemala is also known as la Antigua. It’s a city located in central Guatemala’s highlands. It is well-known for its Spanish Baroque-influenced architecture and a few ruins of colonial church ruins. It was the capital of the Kingdom. It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Antigua Guatemala is the municipality seat of the nearby municipality with the same name. It is also the capital of the Sacatepequez Department.

Chichicastenango is also known as Santo Tomas Chichicastenango. It is the municipality seat for the El Quiche district of Guatemala. It is situated in a mountainous area about 140 km (87 miles) northwest of Guatemala City at an elevation of 1,965m (6,447ft). 

The Spanish conquistadors gave it its name from the Nahuatl name their soldiers from Tlaxcala used: Tzitzicaztenanco or the City of Nettles. Caviar was the original name.

Flores, Guatemala’s capital, is the Peten Department’s northernmost, landlocked department. 13,700 people live in the area (2003).

Flores, with a population of 22,600, is the capital of Flores. Its Catedral Nuestra Senora de Los Remedios y San Pablo Itza is the cathedral episcopal site of the Apostolic Vicariate El Peten.

Quetzaltenango (Quetzaltenango) is the capital and the seat of Quetzaltenango municipality.

Quetzaltenango has 180,706 residents (2018 census). Some areas of the city can rise to 2,400m (7.900 feet).
